This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Avid naturalist and installation artist, Mark Dion, creates public-art projects which illustrate how humans have understood and misunderstood the natural world.

Raised in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Dion attended Hartford Art School after high school. After two years at Hartford, Dion transferred to the School of Visual Arts in New York. The artist also spent a year in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program.

"Dion's installations from the early 1990s onwards deal with the politics of representation, especially in the museums. In his role as a nature and field researcher Dion treats this problem in such works as "On Tropical Nature", 1991, "A Meter of Meadow", 1995, or "A Tale of Two Seas: An Account of Stephan Dillemuth's and Mark Dion's Journey along the Shores of the North Sea and Baltic Sea and What They Found There", 1996. With ironical exaggeration, Dion adduces the processes of collecting, curating, presenting and recording, and he carries current classification systems ad absurdum."(Wege)

In 2001 Mark Dion was awarded the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award.
