Biography from Sunflower Fine Art Galleries, Mirrors, & Picture F:
“For me, a successful painting is one that stands on its own visual merits.  It requires no verbal explanation or justification.  The image reflects an understanding of composition, shape, relationships, and color that is inherently obvious. The skill of the artist’s brush is evident in every stroke.  And, the passion that went into creating the work is captured on the canvas and emanates to the viewer. This is what I am drawn to as an art enthusiast and what I strive for as a painter.”

--"I hope you enjoy viewing my work as much as I enjoy painting it."

Martin Driscoll began drawing as a youth in New York City. In the early 1960’s, after serving in the Air Force, he returned to New York and enrolled in the Art Students League.  He studied under Frank Reilly, a teacher who developed a systematic use of the color palette that continues to serve as a foundation for fine art instruction.  Reilly’s classes became a cornerstone in the development of Driscoll's style.

In the years that followed his studies, Driscoll balanced a career in the airline industry with raising a family and developing as an artist.  He intermittently exhibited at outdoor shows in New York, selling his original paintings and drawings, and accepting numerous portrait commissions.  In the mid-1990’s he returned to art full time – teaching painting, giving art demonstrations, and selling his original work.

In early 2000 to 2002, he opened the Driscoll Art Studio, a working studio and gallery aboard the Queen Mary.  In his studio/gallery, Driscoll did pastoral scenes of rural Irish life and exhibited these Irish themed paintings at ArtExpo 2004 and 2005.

"There came a point in my life when I knew I could paint, but had to give thought to what did I want to paint? This led me to examine my life and remember the joy I had in hearing the tales of Ireland from my relatives, especially my mom. I loved the Irish music and dancing and most especially the Irish people. With the world rapidly changing, I wanted to hold on to some of the memories, so I devoted myself to painting things Irish."  Martin Driscoll

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we post this message:

Master Artist (and dear friend) Martin Driscoll passed away Saturday 8/20/11 after an 8 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He passed on at home, peacefully, with his loved ones by his side. A memorial service will be held Sunday at Unity Church of Wimberley, Texas at 2:00.

Martin, true to his wonderful character, never complained about bad days, kept his wonderful sense of humor intact, fought until the end.

We will miss him terribly. We all take comfort that he is in a well deserved, better place.

He made those lucky enough to be immediately around him happy, and touched thousands upon thousands more through his brilliant art.

Like all the great artists, he will live forever -here on earth- through his wonderful paintings.

We will continue to update the site and will publish a special very small limited edition print to help pay all the Driscoll's large medical bills.  All of the currently published art sales will also assist in that regard.

"May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.May the sun shine warm upon your face.May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand"
