| Moira Jane Dryer (1957-1992)
Abstract artist, Moira Dryer constructed the type of artwork for which
she recognized with sheets of plywood and acrylic paint. The
images she created relied heavily on form and rich color combinations
as exemplified in paintings such as Close Up of 1989.
Dryer was born in Toronto, Canada in 1957. She first attended
Concordia University in Montreal, Canada which was formerly known as
Sir George Williams University. She later received instruction
from Elizabeth Murray, an abstract painter, printmaker and sculptor, at
the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Within two years of
her graduation from the School of Visual Arts in 1981, Dryer had been
married and became a widow.
Her work appeared in solo exhibitions beginning in 1986 at the John
Good Gallery in New York City, followed by shows at institutions such
as the Fred Hoffman Gallery in Santa Monica, California; Institute of
Contemporary Art and the Mario Hoffman Diacono Galley in Boston,
Massachusetts.
The final solo exhibition during Dryer’s career was displayed for two
months at the Mary Boone Gallery of SoHo, New York. A few months
later, in May of 1992, Moira Dryer died from breast cancer at the age
of thirty-four.
