| Born in Oakland, CA on June 24, 1911. Jean Smith grew up in Marin County at Chapman Castle, an historical landmark in Corte Madera. After graduating from Mount Tamalpais High School, she attended UC Davis. A self-taught artist, by the 1920s she had married John Dowling and settled in San Anselmo. About 1930 she began a career in pottery which she sold through Gump's and other fine stores. Her love of horses dominates her artworks. She died in San Rafael, CA on April 15, 2002.
