This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Rosmond deKalb was born in Boston, MA. He studied at the Boston Museum school under Philip Hale and William James. He was also involved in the Provincetown (Massachusetts) Art Colony working with Charles Hawthorne. He resided in Nashua, NH for 37 years and was one of the founders of the New Hampshire Art Association serving as President, Vice President & Exhibition Chairman.
He was considered the patriarch of the New Hampshire art scene for 20 years until his death in 1962. He worked primarily in watercolor and oil. A retrospective of his work was held at the Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, NH in 1963 (one year after his death). The Currier Gallery has a vast collection of his works.
Compiled and submitted April 2004 by M. Stone, Dover NH. "My sources are from a February 1995 auction catalogue (which I assisted in the production of), produced by Michael Bennett Auctions of Dover, NH. (Michael is now deceased. I worked as Michael's auction manager / assistant when he was hired by the heirs of the estate of William 'Roby' and Margaret Beasom Swart of Nashua NH. Michael and I were also great personal friends. According to her grandchildren / heirs, Margaret Beasom Swart had a romantic affair with deKalb, and was his biggest benefactor. I had personal conversations / contact with her heirs, and have seen / read love letters and hotel receipts and other ephemera from their liaisons).
The last I knew, all of Ms. Swart's survivors had deKalb paintings in their possession. I also own 2 nude water colors, purportedly of Ms. Swart, signed by deKalb, with intimate inscriptions on the back of them. Academic and other information that I provide was gleened from the auction catalogue and numerous conversations (in person and on the phone) with the Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, NH, and some of deKalb's contemporaries, such as potters William and Mary Scheir, and Maine artist Francis S. Merritt and his wife.
