This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Constanta, Romania, Simon Donikian is a painter of cityscapes, still lifes, portraits, and semi-abstract compositions with surreal qualities. He has been a resident of Queens, New York for the past 30 years.

The focus of his cityscapes is crowded people going about their business. Following are comments from critics:

Joseph Merkel: "What has happened aesthetically with Donikan is a shift in attention from understanding the general ambience of his urban life scene to becoming more specific. Obviously this is no Hopperesque approach, not even philosophically. It's a new game with new rules, new moods, new emphases."

Alfred Lubrano: "It is this crowded quality of people going about their business that is the main difference between Donikian and another New York City landscape artist to whom he has been compared, Edward Hopper."

Diana Roberts: "Donikian's ability to be figurative without sacrificing art, to be traditional and original at the same time, and to show us what we look at but do not see for ourselves sets him apart as an artist of great sensitivity."

William Zimmer: "An urban counterpart is "Eight Ave., NYC" by Simon Donikian in which a street of plain facades has an air of Paris."
