This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Plein-air painter Stephen Datz intended to be a mathematician and enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University with a major in applied mathematics.  After one year of study he realized he need to be true to his heart and pursue a career in painting.  He went home to Colorado and enrolled in Colorado State University in the fine art department.

While at Colorado State he took a camping trip with his wife-to-be to the Utah desert. After that trip, Datz knew that he wanted to pursue a career in landscape painting. After graduation Datz struggled to make a go of his new career.  His painting found new inspiration after meeting artist, Skip Whitcomb, who introduced him to plein-air painting.

In the March 2007 issue of Southwest Art, Stephen Datz was featured in the section "Artists to Watch".
