A painter who then became a jewelry designer and art educator, Velma
Davis was born in Waco, Texas. She studied with Vivian Aunspaugh
in 1920 and 1926, and also attended Southern Methodist University in
Dallas and the College of Industrial Arts (now Texas Woman's
University) in Denton in 1932.
In 1933, she earned an MFA degree from Columbia University in New York,
and that same year, working with artist Esther Webb, founded the Dallas
