Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
| Landscape painter. Born in California in 1855, the son of a gold miner. Davis was educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute. A gentleman of means and leisure, he painted for the pleasure of it and cared very little for public recognition.
Art critics of the turn of the century ranked him as one of California's finest painters. A lifelong resident of San Francisco at 2501 Scott Street, he committed suicide at sea aboard the steamer Oceanic on March 11, 1910.
