This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following, submitted November 2008, is from the artist:

Alan J. Eddy was born in South Boston and attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston. A scholar of New England maritime history, the artist has felt connected to the sea and the ships that sail upon her. His father spent over 50 years in the U.S. Navy and his uncle built wooden boats. Together the three of them would often sail to the islands off Boston Harbor as well as to Nantucket on their 30' sloop "Buzz."

In the years that followed, as he began to make marines his main focus and passion, these early sailing experiences with his dad and uncle were invaluable in the execution of his marine paintings. To paint marine scenes you have got to be a sailor. You have got to feel how the wind moves, how it affects the sea and how it affects the boat. Otherwise, it is impossible to build a painting that is technically correct. Every painting to me is an adventure-- setting the mood of the sky and thus of the painting--but there are no short cuts, it is five percent inspiration and ninety-five percent hard work.

"American Artist" magazine has published three major articles on the artist work- December 1997, June 1999 and May 2001 in the American Artist Publication "Color".

In addition to painting nostalgic historical yachting scenes, Eddy also produces luminous portraits of the big classic J-Boats, and these works are popular with yachtsman. The January, 2004 "Good Old Boat Magazine" had a centerfold of pictures of artwork by Eddy.

Eddy's work can be found in corporate collections such as: The Scudder and Vanguard Investment Companies, the corporate offices of Sears and Roebuck, Fleet Bank of Boston and the Boston Harbor Hotel. He also has a faithful circle of private collectors.
