Biography from Richard Rhoda Fine Art:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Albin Egger-Lienz was a genre and historical painter born in 1866 in Dolsach-Stribach, a Tyrolean province near Lienz.  Egger-Lienz’s talent was discovered early in his life and was encouraged by both his father, the church painter Gregor Egger, and his father’s friend and fellow painter, Hugo Engel.

After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1884 to 1893 under Karl Raupp, Gabriel von Hackl and Wilhelm von Lindenschmit, Egger-Lienz moved to Vienna in 1899, where he became a member of the Co-operative of Viennese Painters as well as a founding member of the artist’s association, Hagenbund – but did not join the Vienna Secession until 1909.   In fact, when asked to teach one of the Academy‘s master courses in 1910, the Austrian heir to the throne prevented Egger-Lienz from accepting the position.  He moved to Weimar, Germany in 1912, where he taught for a year at the University for Fine Arts before moving to St. Justina, near Bolzano, Italy.

During the ensuing war years, Egger-Lienz created a number of very important paintings.  He declined a professorship at the Vienna Academy for Fine Arts in 1920, but the numerous honors and distinctions he received marked his growing success, as did the acquisition of his paintings by a number of high-ranking individuals.

While Egger-Lienz’s earlier works were clearly influenced by Austrian painter, Franz Defregger, during his time in Vienna he gradually developed his own unique style – culminating in the creation of numerous important historical paintings before his death in 1926.

His mature œuvre is characterized by rich symbolism in monumental canvases depicting war, life and death, and the everyday scenes from rural life he upheld as one of the pillars of human existence.  Albin Egger-Lienz’s works hang in The Leopold Museum in Vienna, The Kunsthalle in Hamburg, as well as many other museums.
