Alexander Edouart was a portrait and landscape painter, but was best known as a photographer in San Francisco. He was the son of silhouettist, Auguste Edouart. Born in London, he was educated at Edinburgh and studied art in Italy. He was living in New York City in 1848-50 and in 1852 he went west to California where he spent the rest of his life, painting California landscapes. He took a brief trip to Europe about 1859. In 1889 or 1890 he moved to Los Angeles, where he died in 1892.

Painter, photographer. Born in London, England on Nov. 5, 1818, the son of famed silhouettist Auguste Edouart. The younger Edouart was educated in Edinburgh, Scotland and studied art in Italy in 1847-48. He then immigrated to New York where he exhibited at the NAD and American Art Union. He sailed to San Francisco in 1852 and was a resident for nearly 40 years except for the year 1857 which he spent in Mendocino County and a trip to Europe in 1859. He had a home in San Francisco at 944 Chestnut Street which was later remodeled by artist Bruce Porter. His early work includes landscapes, portraits, and genre paintings. In 1860 Edouart took up photography as a career. After moving to Los Angeles in 1889, he operated a photography studio. He died there on Nov. 6, 1892.
