Although Alexis England became a professional painter relatively late in life, it was her early experiences that ultimately formed her career as an artist. As a child, she lived in England for a few very formative years; indeed, the English downs and the endless sheep meadows of the countryside would forever affect her desires, aesthetics and goals.
It was during these early years that Ms. England’s natural artistic talents became evident. Her drawing abilities became widely acknowledged, as she swept all awards throughout her school years in England and upon her return, in the U.S. During this time, her singing voice was discovered. Very quickly, she became a headline singer, playing in venues throughout the east coast.
As a young woman, torn between her two talents, she enrolled herself in a fine arts program while continuing to perform. As her success in the music business lured her into a full time career she put her art aside, going on to sing and record with a wide range of artists – including Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, and Sergio Mendez.
After over twenty years in the music business and much soul searching, she gave up her singing career to return to her art. She and her husband bought an old farm in bucolic Dutchess County New York surrounded by rolling hills and a barnyard of animals. An old barn was converted into her studio – thus completing her homecoming. Not only has she found her peace, but she is thriving. After a few years of immersing herself in her craft, she has developed her own distinctive painterly style. She is a natural colourist, with a reputation for always capturing the essence of her subjects. Her clients include not only collectors, designers and academics but ‘country folk’ as well, thus affirming her belief in the profound transforming beauty of the countryside and the animals we share our lives with. A beauty that has informed her work and her life.
