This biography from the Archives of AskART:

Alice “Elsie” Edwards  (1871 – 1932)

Alice “Elsie” Edwards came to the Mount Vernon Seminary in Washington, D.C., at the age of 12 in 1883.  She was the niece of the founder of the Seminary in 1875, Mrs. Elizabeth Somers. She was one of the first editors of The Record; she was also a painter and a talented singer.  Edwards graduated in 1893.

After leaving the Seminary, she studied both art and music in New York, and continued her art studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia, and later in Paris where she was a student of Whistler and Charles Lasar.

She returned to the Seminary to teach singing and dramatic arts from 1901 until retirement in 1930.  She died in 1932.

Miss Edwards was an early member of Washington’s Friday Morning Music Club, the Washington Arts Club and the YWCA.
