This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Aaron Allan Edson was born on the 18th of December, 1846, the son of two Americans living in Stanbridge, Quebec. In 1861, at the age of 27, he took painting lessons under Robert Duncanson, a famous Montreal-born painter. In 1864 he completed his training by studying in London for two years, and then returned to become a charter member of the Society of Canadian Artists in 1867. In the early to mid 1880's (exact dates are controversial), Edson lived in Paris, working with Leon-Germain Pelouse. During this period (some say extending to 1887) he also made visits to London.

Edson is not as well known as he used to be; in the late 1800s when he did most of his work, he was famous for his unique painting of light. He had studied painting in Montreal, London, and Paris, and later was influenced in some of his works by the American Hudson River School of Painting. He was one of the trailblazers for the Luminist movement, and was very involved in art groups. He played a founding role in the Society of Canadian Artists (1867), the Ontario Society of Artists (1872) and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1880). He was, and still is, famous for his (at the time remarkable) realistic, peaceful, and illuminated landscapes that "magnified the beauty of Canada's vast spaces from east to west."

At the time in Canada when Edson was active, the country was probing it's sovereignty from the British motherland. The romantic influence from Europe brought new ideas, but the style was functional, lacking "creative excitement". Mr. Edson's talent for portraying mist and sunshine, contrasting light and shadow, and his meticulous style set him apart. His style was not popular in his native Quebec at first, but was later noticed and appreciated by many Lords in Montreal. Princess Louise bought two of his works for Queen Victoria.

Although he worked in many different places, Edson is known best for the paintings that reflect his memories of childhood in Quebec: tranquil lakes and majestic mountains, which he recorded in almost photo-like precision. He painted mostly in oil, using some watercolour especially during his time in Europe. At the height of his career, Aaron Allan Edson died in Glen Sutton on the 1st of May, 1888, from tuberculosis. He was 42.
