Biography from Long Gallery:
Anthony Emmolo was born June 10, 1963 in New York City and began his formal art education at The School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1985. He graduated in 1988 with a BFA. During his time at S.V.A., the artist sketched the streets of New York. Homeless people, late night waiters and waitresses, and prostitutes were his themes. One month after graduation he made what he had planned to be a 1-4 month trip to Taiwan, in the end the trip lasted 6 years. In that time he built upon his skills and deepened his connection to his subject matter.

People of the Streets were still his subjects, however, it was the older men and women selling their wares in the local street markets of Taipei. Emmolo also sketched older men in the various parks throughout Taipei playing board games and listening to their birds. That is correct, older men in Taipei take their birds for walks in their cages, hang the cages in a tree, and settle down for a game with friends. After doing the interior decorating in a theme night club, using the theme, "The Chinese Relationship with Spiritual Life," he chose to relocate to beautiful Kyoto, Japan. Kyoto, in the artist's own words is "the pearl of the pearl of the Orient." Japan was to be a 1 year stint, once again it was extended and lasted 5 years. It was the temple of Japan that interested the artist and he visited the Kyoto temples daily. To these temples he brought a poetry book and his watercolor supplies.

Some nice things came out of the Kyoto and Taipei years, they were largely years of growth. Emmolo returned to the States and spent 4 years in Northern California. Now, the artist with a renewed interest in the Orient, has relocated to Taipei, Taiwan. This time he spends less time in the streets of Taipei, and more time in his fourth floor studio doing the still-lives that he is known for.
