This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in France, Auguste Edouart was a silhouettist of human and animal and animal subjects and also painted landscapes. He served in the French army until 1813 and then went to England for study. He exhibited animal portraits at the Royal Academy of London from 1815 to 1816 and earned money by teaching landscape painting, doing animal portraits, and making wigs.

In 1925, he began making silhouettes, which turned out to be very successful and which he began when he discovered he could make much better silhouettes with scissors than those made by the popular method with machines. From that time, he was peripatetic, working in Scotland from 1830 to 1833, Ireland for six years, and in 1839, in the United States including Boston, Washington DC, Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Charleston, and New York City.

In 1849, Edouart went back to France but lost most of his silhouette duplicates in a shipwreck off the island of Guernsey. His working habit had been to make two images, one for the client and one for himself, which gave him a portfolio for soliciting more business. He was so devastated by the loss of his copies, about 88,000 out of a total of 100,000, that he never returned to that profession.

In 1835, he completed an autobiography, "A Treatise on Silhouette Likenesses".
