Bjarne Engebret, Engebretsdatter (1905-1985)

He began studying at the Art Academy in 1930, when he was 25 years old. Here he met Gert Jynge, Erling Enger, Sigurd Winge and Olav Stromme.  Jynge had become acquainted with the German Expressionist already when he visited the Great International Exhibition in Dresden in 1926, and Winge was also very interested in this new art direction.  The exhibition «Newer German art " in the House of Artists in spring 1932 inspired Jynge, Winge to make a study trip to Germany the following year.  They came home full of new impressions, inspiration and with a plethora of photographs.  Especially Jynge was a good teacher for their fellow students in both theory and technique.

Bjarne Engebretsdatter painted only a very few expressive images in 1933 and 1934 that have become canonical in this direction in Norway. Brew Workers is one of them while the National Museum owns two others: " Turned bowls " and " Women on the beach."  The images show a clear influence by the German artist Karl Schmidt- Rottluff and are kept in a fresh and tangy expressive palette.  The design is greatly simplified and the figures show clear examples of primitive sculpture, which Jynge and Winge saw and photographed much during their journey in Germany.

Engebretsdatter soon abandoned Expressionist painting in favor of experimental compositions in fresco. When the five academicians held their groundbreaking exhibition at the House of Artists in 1935, it was these pictures he showed.
