|Biography from McBride Gallery:|
|Cedric Baldwin Egeli is a member of one of America’s foremost families of artists. The son of renowned portraitist, Bjorn Egeli, Cedric carries on the family tradition as a nationally recognized portrait artist. |
Steeped in painting from a very young age, Cedric received his early training from his parents. His mother, also an accomplished artist, was a winner of the Prix de Rome while a student at the Corcoran School of Art. Cedric also attended Principia College and -- following in the footsteps of both parents -- attended the Corcoran.
Cedric’s two brothers and two sisters, a son, two daughters a niece and his wife, Joanette, are also notable artists. Their portrait subjects have been presidents, Eisenhower and Nixon, famous generals and admirals, members of presidential cabinets, prominent jurists, as well as physicians, corporate executives, governors and a host of celebrities.
Founder of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters, Cedric Egeli was elected as an ‘Exceptional Member’ of the American Portrait Society. He was the Grand Prize winner of the 1979 National Portrait Competition in New York. He won the Corcoran’s Prix de Rome Award and the Gold Medal from the American Artists Professional League.
Cedric Egeli is also widely acclaimed as a teacher. He has taught at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. He is a regular speaker and workshop instructor at the prestigious National Portrait Institute in Chicago. He spent many summers studying with American Impressionist, Henry Hensche, at the Cape Cod School of Art in Massachusetts and is now a summer teacher there, teaching Introduction to the Portrait, and Advanced Outdoor Portrait Paintings in Oil with his wife Joanette.
Serious portrait students from across the country vie to be accepted into his ‘invitational only’ Winter Workshops. The list of well-known painters who acknowledge Cedric Egeli’s influence in their biographies is very extensive. Most impressive is the list of corporations, universities, hospitals, and government agencies that have commissioned portraits by Cedric Egeli:
