Biography from Wiford Gallery:
Bud Edmondson has won particular acclaim for his paintings depicting the Southwestern landscape. A Native New Mexican, Bud's affection for this country is vividly displayed in his art work. He blends skillful technique with sensitive perception. His ability as a watercolorist is matched by his draftsmanship.

As a child his interest in fine art was first inspired by the black and white illustrations in western fiction magazines. Through them Bud acquired a deep respect for drawing, which has carried over to this day and is the "structure" of his artwork. He is also a firm believer in painting on location, "It's the only way I can get the real feel of a place" he says.

Twelve years ago, while still living in Chicago, he began yearly pilgrimages to New Mexico, gaining inspiration and experience by painting plein aire every day. Many of his larger works began as studies on location and were brought to completion in the studio.

Bud Edmondson grew up in New Mexico as the child of a school teacher. As a young man he moved to California during the war, attended college and served overseas in the Air Force. When he returned to his family in California he quickly enrolled in the Art Center in Los Angeles.

Edmondson then worked in Chicago for thirty years as a commercial illustrator. Some of his clients were Motorola, Sears, Encyclopedia Britannica, and World Book Encyclopedia. For twenty of those years the artist stayed active in fine art from his studio, Edmondson Illustration, by painting, exhibiting, giving workshops, demonstrations and teaching at Northeastern University.

In 1993 the artist and his wife Carolyn decided to make the long-awaited move to their much-loved New Mexico, and bought a home in Albuquerque.

Although adept at many media, watercolor remains the artist's favorite. "It allows me to combine skillful draftsmanship with spontaneity" he says. Bud Edmondson is a full time painter and remains passionate about teaching classes and workshops.
