Ernst Wilhelm Heinrich Eitner born 1867, died 1955.  In 1881 Ernst Eitner began in an apprenticeship as a lithographer in Hamburg, where he then attended the Kunstgewerbeschule am Steintor.  He later studied at the Academy in Karlsruhe. During study trips Eitner visited Italy and Norway.  After a stay in the artists' colony in Gothmund he studied at the academies in Dusseldorf and Antwerp.

In 1892 he received a first gold medal for his watercolor painting in Dresden.  In 1897 Ernst Eitner founded the 'Hamburgische Künstlerklub' (Hamburg Artist Club) together with a group of young painters.  Inspired by the plein air painting of the French Impressionists he created numerous landscape scenes of the region around Hamburg that earned the artist the title 'Monet of the North'.

From 1903 onwards Eitner also became increasingly interested in the theme of the city.  He is considered one of Hamburg's most important chroniclers and his works are represented in all major North German museums as well as numerous private collections.
