This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Harry Leon Engle studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and became a landscape painter for many years following. A group of art supporters and industrial leaders organized the Chicago Galleries Association and located on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, IL. It served as an exhibition and sales outlet for member artists on a non-profit basis for perhaps 25 years. Engle, who was well-known as a painter and "art commentator" in the Chicago area was asked to be the director and manager of the Galleries and it ended his career as a painter, becoming a dealer as the manager of the association. He continued painting for his own enjoyment and also wrote articles critiquing the contemporary art scene for several bulletins and papers. He also was invited to serve on art juries in the MidWest.
Information submitted as a bulletin by the artist's daughter, Alice Engle Seaborne |
