This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Virtually nothing is known of J. Evans. Even the artist's gender is a mystery. Neither the date of birth or death of the artist can be cited. Most of the artist's naive watercolors have been found within a 35 mile-area of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Some seem to originate in the Boston-Roxbury areas of Massachusetts. More academic works are attributed to Evans, which may indicate the artist was active into the mid-19th Century.
These attributed paintings have been found in Maine, New Hampshire and New York. Most of the Evans' portraits are full length and in profile.
