This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born on May 29, 1806 in Providence, Rhode Island, he died in Providence on May 18, 1888.
As a boy already, he went to Boston and apprenticed as an engraver, showing great talent and a love for the arts.  Later on, he went to New York and on to Europe to further his art education and practice.

Eddy realized that there was a market for reproductions of European Old Master paintings, and he became one of the earliest American importers of European art on a larger scale.  He mainly sold the art work in larger cities at auction, and became a wealthy man.

After retirement from business, he returned to Providene and built a mansion, which he filled with art treasures.

Two of his children, Sarah  James and Benjamin  were also artists.

The Eddy Family in America, published by the Eddy Family Association in 1930.
