This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data
compared to the extensive information about American artists.
John Wilson Ewbank (1779-1847)
A Scottish land-and seascape painter, he was born in Gateshead. Ewbank worked for a house painter named Coulson but later moved to Edinburgh and studied with Alexander Nasmyth.
His technique and subject matter were strongly influenced by the Dutch Masters of the seventeenth century, in particular by Van der Velde.
His best work is from the early years, as after about 1810 his style deteriorated. He was elected RSA in 1823.
Ewbank died impoverished in 1847 in Edinburgh.
