In 1949 when abstract art was in style in the United States, Joseph Erhardy, born in Welch, West Virginia, left America for Italy to study classical sculpture. In 1952, he moved to Paris where he has lived the remainder of his life. In spite of living in Paris, he has kept in touch with the United States art scene.
