The following biography is based on information provided to by Peter Erhardy:

In 1949 when abstract art was in style in the United States, Joseph Erhardy, born in Welch, West Virginia, left America for Italy to study classical sculpture. In 1952, he moved to Paris where he has lived the remainder of his life. In spite of living in Paris, he has kept in touch with the United States art scene. His art production is currently exhibited in the US, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Austria where in the past 40 years more than 50 personal and group shows have been organized.

After an abstract period, he turned to a figurative composition in the late
sixties, and his art is available in Paris through the gallery La Bouquinerie de L'Institute, 12 rue de seine.

Following is a chronology of his career:

1947 - 49
George Washington University, Washington D.C.
The Corcoran School of Art, Washington D.C

1949 - 50
Academy of Fine Arts, Florence, Italy

1950 - 51
Assistant to sculptor Mirko Basaldella, Rome, Italy

1951 - 53
The Grande Chaumière Academy, Paris, France

Among his works are a portrait bust in marble at The National Portrait Gallery of John Kenneth Galbraith, a bust in bronze of "Daniel Boorstin", at The Library of Congress, Washington D.C. , and Sir Robert Jackson, a bas-relief in bronze at the Museum of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.

In France, his sculpture can be found at Montparnasse Cemetery in
Paris, The Museum of Modern Art of Paris, Saint Front Cathedral in Périgueux, France, The Georges Pompidou Center, Paris; Square of the Prefecture of Cergy
Pontoise, Val d'Oise/France; French Judaism Foundation, Paris; The Roubaix Hospital, Nord/France; and the Museum of the Resistance Movement in Nantua, Ain/France (acquired in 1991).

In Italy, he has a bronze "Crucifix" in bronze at the Vatican Museum in Rome, and he also has work in collections in Great Britain and the Netherlands.

One Man Exhibitions include: 1968 Ariel Gallery, Paris; 1975 Euroart Gallery, Vienna, Austria; 1976 Nova Spectra Gallery, The Hague, The Netherlands
(under the auspices of Kingdon Gould, US Ambassador to the Netherlands);
1977 Euroart Gallery, Vienna, Austria; 1981 Beaubourg Gallery, Paris; 1990 Vallois Gallery, Paris; 1992 Vallois Gallery, Paris; 1996 "Le Calvary", six over-life size figures, St Sulpice Church, Paris; 1997 "Retrospective Exhibition", (73 sculptures in bronze, marble and terracotta, 11 of which over life-size and 63 drawings) - Beneath the Roof of the Great Arch of la Défense, Paris; Vallois Gallery (with Chana Orloff), Paris; "Free Wheeling" - The World Fair of Two Wheels, Porte de Versailles; Exhibition Hall, Paris 2001 The Bouquinerie de L'Institut Gallery, Paris (in preparation).

In 1996, Erhardy received special recognition for his sculpture image that was the official Season's Greeting card of The French Ministry of Culture.
