|  Portrait, genre and landscape painter, Joseph Oriel Eaton studied in New York City but worked mainly in the Midwest. He was active in Indianapolis 1846-48; in Cincinnati, 1850, 1853, and 1857-60; and in New Orleans before 1857. During the latter part of his career he had his studio in New York City.
He received his early education in Ohio, and then studied for several months with Jacob Cox in Indianapolis before moving to Cincinnati at age seventeen and setting up a studio to get portrait commissions. There he became fairly prominent especially for child portraits and also for genre scenes. Of this skill, it was written: "His wonderfully quick eye for effects and great manual dexterity made it easy for him to accomplish with rapidity and certainty whatever he undertook." (Dearinger, 180)
Beginning 1853, Eaton exhibited at The National Academy of Design, and in 1864 moved to New York from Cincinnati, exhibiting at the Academy every year from that time until a year before his death. Among his titles were literary and mythology subjects such as Venus and Cupid and King Lear. Because he did not exhibit between 1860 and 1864, it is thought that he may have been gone for Civil War duty.
