Biography from a third party submitted on 12/15/2006:
Kathleen Elsey is a colorist who works in plein air in California, the Southwest, Mexico and Europe.  She grew up in Ohio where she studied fine arts at Bowling Green State University.  She moved to California in 1973 and established a very successful career in design and advertising in San Francisco.  She now resides in Santa Barbara and concentrates full time on her fine art career.

As a colorist she is influenced by the fauvists, especially Vincent Van Gogh and the California impressionists.  She applies her background in design, color and composition to her paintings, reaching inside to express from her heart rather than her mind.

Artist Statement:
"My interest in painting is with direct paint application in an expressive manner while using pure color combinations and big meaty brushstrokes for a painterly and colorful picture. I usually paint on location with acrylic paint to facilitate this activity.

This coincides with my love for being in nature and feeling the sunlight in places that I have visited.  Some locations are very meaningful to me and have left an indelible impression on my visual sensibiltiy.  I feel my paintings are expressive interpretations of these places.  In my work I try to let the paint and color provide a suggestion of reality with a quality that intimates a sense of place that is soothing and relaxing."
