This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biography, submitted March 2005, is from Michael M Engel III, the son of the artist Michael Martin Engel II.

Born in New York City in March of 1919, Michael Martin Engel II was immediately part of the New York Art community. His father, Michael M. Engel was director of publications and research at the M. Grumbacher art material supply company, so young Michael grew up surrounded by art and artists. In the late 1930's, he attended the Art Students League of New York and is a Life Member.

Michael Martin Engel II is a former member of the Salmagundi Club, National Arts Club, Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts of London, honorary member of Kappa Pi, former President of Artists Fellowship and a former president of Audubon Artists.

Originally a pure watercolor artist, he later worked in both casein and acrylic. He is known primarily for his marine, cityscape and landscape paintings of New York and Long Island, where he moved in 1948. Not surprisingly, he also did paintings based on his travels to the Caribbean, Ireland, Florida and Vermont.

His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Parrish Art Museum of Southampton, Long Island, NY, St. Lawrence University, Canton NY, Antioch College, OH, The Navy Combat Art Collection, as well as private collections.
