This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A painter whose images are executed in realist style and then arranged in ways that whose effects could rightly be described as surrealistic, allegorical, satirical, and humorous, Nicole Eisenman is known for her huge, vividly colored canvases as well as collages, drawings, found-object assemblages, and murals.

One of her paintings, Progress: Real and Imagined, completed in 2006, measures 8 by 30 feet, and with a WPA-like title has so many vignettes of people and their lives that the effect is dizzying, 'Hogarthian' or as one critic wrote, "dyke punk". The latter description reflects a theme in her own life, which is lesbian motherhood, but not all of her motives carry personal messages nor it is necessary to understand each of them to appreciate her work.   She has repeatedly expressed suspicion of abstracton, and generally has shown little interest in non-objectivity.,

Eisenman is described as "the creator of drawings in multifarious profusion", and her career has spanned several phases including tacked and taped installations of work on paper in a variety of mediums and random stages of finish from sloppy to highly refined.  She has employed many pop images including from Marvel comic books, and has also depicted underwater scenes of shipwrecks, mermaids, and sharks.

Eisenman, who lives in New York City, was born in Verdun, France and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, where in 1987 she eanred an M.F.A. in painting.  The previous year, she was part of the School's Year-in-Rome Award.  In 1995, she received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and a Penny McCall Foundation Grant, and in 1996, a John Simon Guggenheim Grant.
