The son and student of Jean-Baptiste Tetar van Elven, Pierre Tetar Van
Elven studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Amsterdam and then at the
Academy of Art in The Hague.
He moved to Paris in 1856 where he painted watercolors, as well as a
variety of subjects in oil. He was particularly accomplished in
genre scenes, and urban landscapes.
In 1858 Van Elven left for Italy where he lived in Rome as a painter at
the court of Victor Emmanuel II. During this period he also
visited and painted in the Near East, Palestine, North Africa and
India. It was through these travels that he added Orientalist
themes to his painting oeuvre.
In 1861 he returned to France where he settled. He exhibited
there, as well as in Amsterdam, The Hague and the Royal Academy in
London. In 1868, he sold his canvas Evening at the Tuileries to the French Emperor.
