This biography from the Archives of AskART:
This biographical sketch is donated by a relative of Raymond Ewing. The first bit of information obtained was written in Massachusetts newspaper dated May 27, 1961.

"Mr. Ewing is a native of Easthampton, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Ewing. He studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, in New York at the Art Students League, and with Aldro Hibbard at Rockport. He has worked in many media and has conducted all classes besides devoting much time to painting, doing some outstanding work in catching the four seasons in this vicinity and being especially know for his ability with seascapes done at Deere Isle."

In another article I have about him, by Dorothy Potter, "Mr. and Mrs. Ewing met in art school and on their honeymoon started collecting rare, antique blown glass bottles, which have doubled as house ornaments and subjects for their respective paintings. The young couple lived in New York for the a few years while he started his artist's career doing magazine covers, book jackets, and illustrating books and magazine stories. A move to Boston changed his interest to bringing "hunks" of the outdoors indoors--on canvas. There followed stints of teaching and painting in his Easthampton and Springfield studios, working as a machinist during WW II which culminated in his present pattern of operation, spending fall, winter, and early spring in Easthampton and the other months on Deer Island off the coast of Maine painting and teaching."

Then in his obituary in March 6, 1976 Easthampton newspaper it says, "Born in the Pine Grove section of Northampton on May 4, 1891, the son of Alexander and Esther Ewing, he attended public schools in Northampton. Later he entered the US army 7th Engineers and served in France during WWI. After the war he attended photography school in Worcester, and graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, and the Art Student League in New York City. He studied with Aldro HIbbard at the Rockport School of Art.

Ewing worked as a magazine cover illustrator in New York City, and later operated an art school in Springfield for several years. He moved to Easthampton in 1929 after his marriage in Milton. Ewing painted many landscapes of the Pioneer Valley, as well as portraits of area people."
