Robert Engelhorn (1856-1933)
Robert Engelhorn started his artistic training at the Academy of Arts in
Karlsruhe under Ernst Hildebrand (1833-1924), followed by further
education through Jules-Joseph Lefebvre (1856-1944) in Paris. Engelhorn
spent some time in Munich, where he mainly devoted himself to genre
painting. In Baden-Baden, he focused on portrait and landscape painting.
In 1897, the painter joined the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin and in
1911 the exhibition at the Munich Crystal Palace.
Parallel to his
artistic activity, Robert Engelhorn engaged himself as patron and
provided great financial support for the building of the Kunsthalle in
Baden-Baden, opened in 1909. Besides, the artist also initiated the
artist’s association ‘Freie Künstlervereinigung Baden-Baden’.
