Born in Wayne, Pennsylvania, Robert Else had a painting and teaching career in California, where from 1950 to 1979, he was Professor of Art at California State University in Sacramento. He then became Professor Emeritus.
He earned BS and MA degrees at Columbia University. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Crocker Museum.
