This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following is from Sandra Harris who credits Artists in California: 1786-1940 by Edan Hughes
Robert Oliver ENGARD (1915-- ) Watercolorist, lithographer, commercial artist. Born in Philadelphia PA on April 16 1915. Engard studied at Washington State University. He was a resident of Spokane WA and Salt Lake City UT during the 1940s and 1950s. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is from Glenn Mason:
Mr. Engard is still living as of December, 2001, in Spokane, WA. He taught lithography at the WPA Art School in Spokane in the late 1930s before it closed and he went into the armed services. He is well known in the Spokane area for his great regionalist lithographs and watercolors. He was a close friend of Z. Vanessa Helder, and they often went out together sketching and painting in the late 1930s.
The Northwest Museum of Art and Culture (formerly the Cheney Cowles Museum) / Eastern Washington State Historical Society (Spokane, WA) has a good representative collection of Engard's works in it permanent regional art collection. During the 1930s and 1940s Engard exhibited rather extensively throughout the West Coast and elsewhere.
After almost a 50 year lapse in exhibiting, the Cheney Cowles Museum has shown his earlier work. He began to take up his watercolor painting again more seriously circa 1991 after the Cheney Cowles Museum "rediscovered" his work and made contact with him. He has served the past decade or so as an active member of the Museum's art docents. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Note from David Martin, October 2003
