| | Born in Cork, Ireland in 1823. England studied art and architecture in Cork and continued in Philadelphia after immigrating to the U.S. in 1848. He arrived in San Francisco with the Gold Rush in 1851. There he built St Mary's Cathedral and other Catholic churches in the area. He died in San Francisco on Oct. 23, 1869.
