Thorvald Erichsen  (1868 - 1939)

Thorvald Erichsen was born the 18 July, 1868 in Trondhjem. After beginning his artistic studies in Bergslien's School in Christiania he went to Copenhagen where, in company with other young compatriots, he spent some time under the sagacious and inspiring eye of Kristian Zahrtmann (see AskART).

In order further to enlarge his vision and develop his maturing taste he later visited Paris and Italy, returning home to identify himself with that significant movement which in the 'nineties was headed by such men as Harald Sohlberg (see AskART) and Halfdan Egedius (see AskART), and which may be characterized as the new romanticism.

Erichsen, however, possesses distinctly more painter like qualities than either of the foregoing artists. His technique is freer and more expressive, and he has learned, possibly from the Danes, to give his work a soft, almost luscious richness of tone and texture quite unlike Harald Sohlberg's (see AskART)  more constrained surfaces.

His most important canvases have been painted in Gudbrandsdalen, and such of those as attain the excellence of the Telemarken Landscape in the National Gallery are certainly a distinct contribution to Scandinavian art.
