This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in Australia. While based in Brisbane, Edgar shipped out as a sailor. On the Brisbane wharfs he entertained the sailors with his violin and sold his paintings at 25 shillings each. His travels took him to Sydney, Honolulu, Newcastle, and New South Wales. He was in San Francisco in 1908, 1912 and 1918; while there he painted seascapes and a view of the Farallon Islands. The accuracy of his ship portraits evince his thorough knowledge of the subjects. In: Nat'l Maritime Museum (London); Maritime Museum (SF); De Young Museum; Maritime Museum (Bath, ME). | Source: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" British 19th Century Marine Painting by Denys Brook-Hart; Ferdinand Perret Files; Story of Australian Art by Wm Moore. | | Nearly 20,000 biographies can be found in Artists in California 1786-1940 by Edan Hughes and is available for sale ($150).
