Born in Queen Annes County, MD on Sept. 7, 1811, William Hemsley Emory,
after graduating from the U. S. Military Academy, served in the Army
Topographical Engineers in 1838.
During 1844-46 he worked on the boundary survey between Canada and the
U.S. At the outbreak of the Mexican War he was sent to
California. As a colonel with the Army of the West, he fought in the
battles of San Gabriel, San Pasquale, and the plains of Mesa.
