Following is The New York Times obituary of the artist:

"Andreas Feininger, 92, Dies; Portrayed New York in Photos"
By Andy Grundberg, February 20, 1999

Andreas Feininger, a pioneering photographer known both for his pictures for Life magazine and for his more personal images, died on Thursday at New York University Medical Center in Manhattan.  He was 92 and lived in Manhattan.

During his 60-year career Mr. Feininger photographed a wide range of subjects, from individual portraits to pictures of skyscrapers and seashells. But whatever his subject, he described it with a clarity and precision that were the characteristics of his style.

The son of the painter Lyonel Feininger, he was born on Dec. 27, 1906 in Paris. He grew up in Germany and in the 1920's attended the Bauhaus, where his father taught and where young Lyonel worked with Marcel Breuer and Joseph Albers.  The Weimar-based, innovative school of art and design was one of the first to accept photography as an equal partner of the other visual arts, and Andreas Feininger found it so intriguing a medium that he pursued it on his own while studying cabinetmaking and architecture.

His pictures of the time focused on the products of the industrial age, especially automobiles, which he portrayed as epitomes of power and speed.

After leaving school he worked as a cabinetmaker and as an architect in Germany, but he continued to take photographs. In 1933 he moved to Sweden, and in 1936 he decided to devote himself to photography. In 1939 he immigrated to the United States and found work in New York as a freelance photographer with the Black Star Picture Agency. His clients soon included Life, and he was invited to join the magazine's staff in 1943. From then to 1962, when he left the magazine, he completed 346 assignments.
