This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| An exhibitor in the Saint Louis Art League, Augusta Finkelnburg was a landscape painter.
The following is from Nancy Pendery, an artist from Fort Thomas, Kentucky and a relative of the artist:
Augusta, although not married, adopted my mother Emma Stroup in, I believe, 1910 when she was seven years old. Augusta was born in 1863 in Fountain City, Wisconsin. The family originally came from Prussia. She had six siblings, information that came from the 1880 census. She is listed in the "Dictionary of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, (Printed in France 1911) and in Who's Who in American Art 1938-39.
Her home at this time was Kimmswick, MO. She studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn; in Paris at the Colarossi Academy; Italy, Holland, Spain and England. She studied with Robert Reid, Willard Metcalf, Henry B. Snell (England), Herbert Adams and Arthur W. Dow. She was a member of the St. Louis Art Guild and St. Louis Art League.
Numerous awards are listed in this article in Who's Who. There is a large article about Augusta in the "St. Louis Globe Democrat" newspaper of July 31, 1932 that includes a photo. I have photos of her studio and paintings and Augusta with my mother. They traveled to Assisi, Italy some time around 1910. I have a post card they sent to a friend in St. Louis. According to the article in the "St. Louis Globe Democrat," she made seven trips to Europe. |
