French, 1856-1923
Flameng was renowned as France's greatest war artist during the First World War. Alongside Georges Scott, he was given official accreditation by the War Ministry to go into the trenches and depict the horrors and truths of war. In numerous, powerful canvases, he masterfully illustrated it’s effects: bombed landscapes, ravished villages, destroyed bridges and combat scenes in the hills and forests of France. Flameng’s acute eye for detail of costume and nuances of expression also lead to numerous portrait commissions and carefully-rendered genre scenes painted in the vein of Meisonnier. | |
