Biography from Old Territorial Indian Arts:
| Grace Medicine Flower was born in 1938 to Agapita and Camilio Tafoya at
Santa Clara Pueblo New Mexico. Her brother is Joseph Lonewolf,
also a noted pottery artist.
In the late 1960s Lonewolf created a new style of sgrafitto* carving of
small stone burnished seed jars, which led to Grace and their father
Camilio all following in that genre. Each has a particular style,
and Grace in particular has a lovely lyrical way with florals and
insects, especially butterflies and hummingbirds.
Her most prized recognition was taking Best of Show at the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial competition many years ago.
Medicine Flower has been part of many gallery exhibitions in Santa Fe
and Scottsdale, plus she was included in the exhibition "Pottery by
American Indian Women", which opened in 1997 at the new National Museum
of Women in the Arts.
Medicine Flower continues to create beautiful pottery and her style is still evolving. |
