| A painter in the Abstract Expressionist tradition, Finkelstein nevertheless mainly paints from nature, finding his rhythm in the interplay of color and movement.
He studied at the Cooper Union Art School in New York City from 1976 to 1980 (B.FA.), most notably with Rueben Kadish and Nicholas Marsicano. From 1981 to 1983 he studied at the Yale School of Art, in New Haven, Connecticut, with Lester Johnson, among others (M.F.A., 1983). Finkelstein has received numerous honors and awards, including a Fulbright Fellowship (Italy 1983-84), the Alfred and Trafford Klots Residency Fellowship (Chateau de Rochefort en Terre, France, 1992 and 2000), the Carnegie Prize (National Academy of Design Annual 2003).
