This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| an American expatriate artist, James Freeman was born in New Brunswick, Canada, spent his childhood in Otsego County, New York, and lived most of his art career years in Rome, Italy as an expatriate. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City, and was elected to Academy membership in 1833.
However, shortly after, at the age of 28, he moved to Italy where he painted portraits and sentimental genre scenes, often with street urchins. Reportedly he lived a Bohemian life and had a happy disposition and flair for storytelling, which was reflected in his paintings.
