Biography from Tucson Museum of Art:
James Farrah captures images that exist in the magic hours of dusk and the night. Focusing on the play between shadow and light in the medium of gouache, he paints unique moments from his travels around the world. Farrah chooses nocturnal urban scenes because they appeal to him on an emotional level—he poses the question, “What is hiding in the shadows?” Challenging painting problems in depicting the high contrast between light and dark and multiple lighting sources also intrigues the artist.

For twenty years prior to his nocturnal urbanscapes, Farrah painted automobiles of all kinds in watercolors—from racecars to the most pristine of vintage cars. To Farrah, cars represent the icons of our time and are central to our daily activities. Not only are they the focus of a composition, but often serve as accents in larger environments or as backgrounds for other subjects. Farrah grew up in Pittsburgh.

In 1973, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pennsylvania State University with three majors: painting, graphic design, photography. In 1980 he moved to New Mexico, and within ten years he moved again to Arizona, where he currently resides. In 2001 he exhibited in the exhibition, “Inside/Outside” at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. In 2002 he participated in the National Spring Open Juried Exhibition at the Wayne Art Center in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Farrah is a member of the Arizona Artists Guild.
