| Wood block engraver and printer, John Foster was a native of Dorchester, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard and graduated in 1667. He then taught English grammar, writing, and Latin in Dorchester. He began printing and engraving, producing the earliest known portrait print made in America, a woodcut engraving of Rev. Richard Mather in 1670, which was used for the The Life and Death of That Reverend Man of God, Mr. Richard Mather (Cambridge, MA, 1670).
