The following, submitted November 2004, is from the artist.

Currently based in northern California, Filipino-American painter John Yoyogi Fortes creates work that addresses social and political issues such as human rights, the environment, identity, family and globalization.

Paintings by Fortes are included in private and public collections such as the Asian American Art Centre in New York, The Nevada Art Museum in Reno, Nevada and the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California.

In 2001 and 2002, John Fortes received a New Works Grant and the Commissioners Award in Art from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. He also received a Visual Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council in 2003. Recently, he has been nominated as a candidate for a 2004 Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in New York.
