This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| In the late 1920s, he was asked by the City of New York to design a
series of bronze lightposts for Fifth Avenue. The first, completed in
1931, was installed at 41st and Fifth, and 103 others followed between
8th and 59th Streets. Each traffic light was topped by a bronze
statuette of Mercury. In the late 20th century, only several survived,
two at the Museum of the City of New York, one in the offices of the
Fifth Avenue Association, and two were offered by Sotheby's
Auction House.
