| Marguerite Paquette Fainmel CAS, FCA (1910 – 1981) Marguerite Paquette Fainmel (AKA: Marguerite Paquette, AKA: Marguerite Fainmel) was a painter and muralist. (1) She was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and, other than for three years in New York City (1929 – 1931), lived most of her life in Montreal. Her mediums included oil paint, pastel and fresco*. Her subjects were landscapes, buildings, still life, portraits and figures. Her styles included Fauvism* and Expressionism*. In the 1920s, she studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal and from 1931 to 1934 at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière*, Paris under Andre Lhote [see AskART]. She was a member of John Lyman’s [see AskART] avant-garde* Contemporary Arts Society* and of the Federation of Canadian Artists*; and she exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1938 and 1942. (2) According to the Canadian Heritage Information Network* Marguerite Paquette Fainmel works are in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto) and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa). Footnotes: (1) Her husband was Charles Fainmel (1904 – 1968). He was a painter, illustrator and writer and also a member of the Contemporary Arts Society.
